Eugenie and her sister Paca group portrait

The future Empress Eugénie and her older sister María Francisca De Sales, "Paca," are shown together in this portrait. Eugenia's older sister inherited most of the family titles and also married the most important noble in Spain, the Duke of Alba. Paca was born in 1824, Eugenia in 1825.

The belted waist is characteristic of the middle 1830s, soon to be replaced by vee waistlines. Elaborately curled hair was in fashion at the start of the decade, but was changing to the straight coiffures associated with the early Victorian era in mid decade.
