ca. 1530 Lady Alice More by follower of Hans Holbein (private collection)

According to her article in thepeerage, Alice More was born Alice Harpur, married John Middleton and bore him a daughter, and then married Sir Thomas More who, according to Wikipedia, was beheaded in 1535 for refusing to acknowledge Henry VIII as head of the Church of England and the annulment of Henry’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon. He was consigliere to Henry VIII who was unable to make him an offer he couldn't refuse. She was Thomas More’s second wife, he had four children by his first wife Joan Colt according to his article in thepeerage.

English dress was conspicuously modest in the early 1500s and had a religious flavor with church gable headdress, somber colors, and prominent crucifix. Her under-sleeves and jewelry add notes of color to Lady Alice's otherwise somber nun-like dress.
