Maria Farnese by Matteo Loves (Musée d'Art et d'Histoire - Genève Switzerland)

I have been aware of this portrait for years, but the dress strikes me as being ugly. Her otherwise undistinguished saya has a very wide collar decorated with what appears to be sophisticated lace. Sophisticated lace is associated with the end of ruffs and farthingales - a ruff is not the best way to display expanses of new beautiful laces.
