ca. 1624 Nicole de Lorraine, Duchess of Lorraine by Balthasar Moncornet (location unknown to gogm)

Nicole was the first of Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine's, three wives. His second was Beatrice de Cusance who Charles married without working through a divorce with Nicole. The divorce problems were like those that faced King Henry VIII when he tried to divorce Catalina de Aragón. Her Wikipedia article is here.

Duchess Nicole wears a bertha made of the newly sophisticated lace as well as lace trim elsewhere on her dress. Pearls as well as lace are used to emphasize important lines of her dress.
