ca. 1585 Elizabeth Sydenham, Lady Drake by George Gower (Buckland Abbey - Plymouth, Devon UK)

Lady Elizabeth came to prominence in 1595 when she married the son of Edmund Drake, (Sir) Francis. Francis had married Mary Newman in 1569, sailed around the world in 1577, lost Mary in 1583, and helped defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588. He died on his ship Defiance in 1596. Elizabeth went on to marry Sir William Courtenay, but died in 1598. Her article in thepeerage is here.

Lady Elizabeth looks enormously wide in this Gower portrait showing her in a black dress with puffed  cloth of silver sleeves adorned with a trellis work of pearls in hanging sleeves lined with silver brocade that matches her under-skirt.
