1581-1582 ca. - A Ball at the Court of Henri III by French school (Versailles) excerpt

A closer look at the French farthingale.

The two ladies in the foreground are wearing straight coiffures decorated with some kind of jeweled band.  These straight coiffures would, from the back, be very becoming in the 1880s. All of the ladies appear to wearing straight hair. The lady facing away to the right wears sleeves adorned with puffed cloth ornaments or slashing. The lady facing the viewer to the right wears a bodice with a square or crescent neckline as well as accordion-pleat sleeves.
