Beautiful as a girl and less so as she matured, she was born 1575, married Henri IV who had his marriage with Marguerite de Valois annulled, quarreled with his mistress Catherine Henriette de Balzac d'Entragues whom Henri had jilted when he married Maria, and was widowed when Henri IV was assassinated in 1610. She was not sufficiently firm with the nobility and fell into disputes with her son Louis XIII. She spent much of the rest of her life plotting against Cardinal Richelieu. Her Wikipedia article is here.
