Anne Leighton by Gilbert Jackson (Lydiard House - Lydiard Tregoze, Swindon, Wiltshire UK)

A good biographic sketch of her, including this image, can be seen here. She was Elizabeth Knollys' daughter.

This striking portrait is a tour de force of feminine headdress and jewelry. Her dress has two stages of circular ruffs, a lower single ruff and a triple ruff above. The lace does not have the skeletal appearance of earlier reticella lace.

The bbc.co Web site dates this to ca. 1630, but the style would have been dated at the time.
