ca. 1532-1535 Lady Margaret Wotton, Marchioness of Dorset by follower of Hans Holbein the Younger (Weiss Gallery)

Lady Margaret is not well known in her own right, but she was the grandmother of Margaret Audley, Duchess of Norfolk via her daughter Elizabeth. Her grand daughter Jane Grey was briefly Queen of England until Mary Tudor deposed her and had her executed while Jane's sister Catherine secretly married Edward Seymour, an act that caused Queen Elizabeth to throw her in The Tower where she died after bearing two sons. Her Wikipedia article, including a Holbein drawing dated to ca. 1532-1535 that was used to date this image, is here.

ca. 1532-1535 Lady Margaret Wotton, Marchioness of Dorset by follower of Hans Holbein the Younger (Weiss Gallery)

Lady Margaret wears the English gable headdress with one side extended into a vail while the other side is folded. She wears a partlet covering about half of the neck opening attached to the bottom of her modesty piece or top of her bodice. The modesty piece appears to be part of her chemise that is partially bared by her split bodice. She wears fur at mid-sleeve height. I cannot determine if the white strips framing her neckline and bodice are separate from or part of her dress. While her necklaces are sparse and simple, her rings are show pieces.
