Queen Margherita and Kaiserin Augusta Viktoria at a military review

This print shows two pillars of reactionary virtue, Queen Margherita and Empress Augusta Viktoria, at a military review. The warm, chummy feeling conveyed by this print, reflecting a treaty, was proven false in 1915 when Italy entered World War I on behalf of the Franco-British-Russian alliance.

Margherita’s jacket has leg-o-mutton sleeves while the Kaiserin’s has baggy sleeves. The Kaiserin’s jacket has more dramatic cuffs.
