1869 or 1870 Princess Alexandra of Wales by W. & D. Downey

Posted to the Sex, Vintage & Royals blog on 9 June 2011; background spots removed and sepia tone removed by gogm.

Princess Alexandra wears a dress marking the transition of the conical crinoline to the bustle. First bustle period dresses stressed square instead of vee necklines and were heaped under layers of ruffles and over-skirts, but the protrusion to the rear is not yet fully formed.
