1884 Edith, Lady Playfair by John Sargent (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston USA)

Lady Playfair made effective use of gold satin and black in the dress she wore to be portrayed by Sargent in 1884. Her cuirasse bodice ends with a vee rather than basque line. The portrait does not emphasize her expansive bustle, but the strip of gold at the left shows it is there.

Keywords:  1884, Sargent, British, straight coiffure, square neckline, modesty piece, bows, vee waistline, elbow length tight sleeves, bustle, jeweled neck band, choker necklace
