1914 Alexandra Feodorovna wearing a long white dress by Yakov Yakovlevich Veber (State Russian Museum - St. Petersburg, Russia)

Alexandra is not looking happy. What does someone who is tightly bound by an ideological and/or religious corset do in a bad situation? She has a hemophiliac son who is supposed to be the wonder warrior who will defend the Motherland after her discredited husband dies. Constitutional monarchy morphing more and more to democracy? Not to her and even less to Nicholas II. And what if war comes? So there are thunderclouds looming on her horizon. Today, the declining superpower is probably going to led by an ideologically-bound woman who can’t get past markets and entrepreneurs (“innovators”) and more war, blessed as she is now by the petro-warriors of the last decade. And the alternative? A would-be Führer. I’m not very happy either!

Google Language Tools translates the artist’s last name as Weber, but it is a German “W”, because the cyrillic character for the first letter in his last name is “B” which is pronounced as “vee” in English.
