Blanche Maynard, Lady Algernon Gordon-Lennox wearing a wide hat

She was called "The Best Dressed Woman In England." With the likes of Queen Alexandra, Princess Mary, the Duchess of Sutherland, etc., etc. around, being proclaimed best dressed was no mean feat.

Blanche Maynard, Lady Algernon Gordon-Lennox wearing a wide hat from theesotericcuriosa.blogspot of 18Jul11

Time has passed and Lady Blanche is wearing a neo-Empire dress with vest panels flanking the bodice held together by an art nouveau-art deco strap. Her bodice could end with a shallow vee waistline, but it might not. Her hat is the striking part of this portrait - big, black, and feathered.
