1897 Mary Emmeline Laura, née Milner, Lady Gerard as Astarte, Goddess of the Moon by Mendelssohn, photogravure by Walker & Boutall

This photo was taken as part of the celebration of Queen Victoria’s 60th year on the throne in 1897, the Duchess of Devonshire’s costume ball. Dresses worn there have not been posted here because they were all too often awkward interpretations of costumes worn by historical personages. Baroness Gerard is just a portraying a mythological figure.

This photo shows that Madonna was not the first to wear cones. Lady Mary may be wearing a train attached at her shoulders and also from her arms.
