This shows one way of providing a modesty piece that peeks out above the neckline of a bodice and presentable under-garments wherever a bodice or sleeves have openings. Corset covers protected bodices from being abraded by the boning in corsets and vice versa. Corset covers also protected corsets, that were hard to clean after steel bones that rusted were introduced into their construction in the 1800s, from soiling from the outside. Chemises protected corsets from soiling by body oils from the inside.
