Maria Antonia by Martin van Meytens (Hofburg, Innsbruck Austria)

This portrait of Maria Antonia is part of the group of portraits of Maria Theresia's children by van Meytens, including Maria Josepha and Maria Carolina. This may have been painted shortly before the 15-year old went to France in 1770.

From the Farbdiaarchiv zur Wand- und Deckenmalerei of Zentralinstitut fur Kunstgeschichte.

Marie-Antoinette wears a grotesque mantuas like the ones in which her sisters posed for their van Meytens portraits on the Habsburg wall of fame. Her jewelry is all that keeps this viewer's interest in taking the portrait seriously.
