1785-6 Marie Antoinette Walking in the park at Versailles with her Children, Louis Charles and Madame Royale by Adolf Ulrich Wertmüller (Nationalmuseum - Stockholm, Sweden)

Royalty have used art as propaganda and Marie-Antoinette was losing the PR battle in 1785 when this portrait was painted. She appears with children and little jewelry here. She was called "Madame Deficit" for her spendthrift ways and France had run up a huge public debt financing support of the American Revolution that included action on land and sea. Plain dress would counter the "Madame Deficit" label and the children would elicit sympathy.

Marie-Antoinette wears a "zone" dress with a vest that meets at just one point below the center of her bust line, spreads like a tent, but adheres closely to her bodice down to her waistline, then swells out over the back of her skirt to turn into an over-skirt. The vest has a square opening framing her bust line and quarter length sleeves with lace cuffs. Below the vest-over-bodice is a dress of satin or similar material with a laced bodice and basque waistline. Her dress also has elbow length sleeves with lace engageantes and a square neckline framed by two lace berthas - not a décolletage (although she looks bare-breasted in this portrait). Her skirt has a bustle in back and one flounce edged with shiny fabric and lace at the hem in front. If the vest-over-skirt had lapels and long sleeves, it could be called a redingote. She wears a huge bouffant coiffure with a profusely feathered hat above. The heel of one of her shoes also shows in this portrait.
