Albinia, Countess of Buckinghamshire by Daniel Gardner (Bonham's, London UK)

Albinia made Tart of the Week in The Duchess of Devonshire's Gossip Guide to the Eighteenth Century for 19 June 2009 - not for her sexual exploits, but for her fondness for faro.

The Countess is wearing a bustle worthy of the 1880s and a wonderfully elaborate coiffure in this Gardener portrait. Her dress appears to have a vee neckline, probably made into a trapezoid by a modesty piece of some sort, and a neckline ruff trimmed with lace behind. The ruff and sleeves point to this being a van Dyck revival.
