Lady Skipwith wears a big hat over curly coiffure and a full skirt, but apparently not using panniers jutting to her sides in this 1787 Gainsborough. Her dress may have two necklines, a higher one created by her modesty piece and a lower one concealed by her fichu but announced by the arc of a pale blue ribbon. Her dress shows French influence.
