This 1782 Gainsborough of Louisa Beckford offers still more proof that British Ladies preferred to be portrayed in casual dress. Her hairdresser took two large pigtails, often draped over a Lady's shoulders, and looped them up to the back center of her coiffure beneath what appears to be a metal tiara.
