Rhoda’s dress with a vest atop a chemise that, in this and other some other cases, has a van Dyck-style ruff is a style that persisted into mid-century. The sheer sleeves were also used in the 1810s through 1830s and the waist band combined with a down turned waistline would dominate from the later 1890s to almost 1910.
