Who is the marquise de Gast? I don’t know! And that’s after a half hour searching the Internet for information about a marquise or marquis de Gast. Gast could be a truncated word.

Sotheby’s found a smudged date. While this could be 1743, it could be 1753. Cuffs were evolving and variable in the 40s, but standardized in the 50s. She may be wearing a watch.
