This is the back view of a robe volante, what would evolve into the enormously flattened skirts of most of the rest of the century. The waffle-skirted successor to this was the robe à la française. The center back panel(s) drapes down the center of the skirt. They are attached to a bateau-shaped panel flanked by extensions of the back panels.
