Catherine’s coiffure comes from before the hurluberlu came into fashion, a fashion she became aware of. The use of pearls and jet is striking. The dress appears to be adorned with appliqué strips of lace. Her sleeves could be paned or that could be an illusion caused by the strips of lace.
