Violante di Baviera by Niccolò Cassana (Museo Stibbert - Firenze Italy)

Duchess Violante Beatrice of Bavaria, portrayed here by Cassana, lived from 1673 to 1731 and served as Governor of Siena. Her marriage to Grand Prince Ferdinando de' Medici produced no children; he died of syphilis and she governed Siena for the balance of her life. Her Wikipedia article is here.

Violante's dress is thoroughly 1600s, but her lace engageantes are a preview of coming attractions. This image also shows the pattern on her brocade dress.
