1854(?) Katarzyna Potocka black and white by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (location unknown)

The image comes from www.liveinternet.ru/users/katish_09/. The authoritative Winterhalter compendium prepared by Eugene Barilo von Reisberg does not show this image, but entry 507 may describe it. Entry 507 lists the date as 1865 and states, "Present location unknown." It was lost during World War II. The movie Monuments Men shows Nazis burning art; the Nazis held Slavic peoples in low regard. That may have happened to this Winterhalter. The movie The Imitation Game shows mechanical devices breaking the Nazi's "unbreakable" Enigma code. The movie does not mention that the Enigma was worked out and a duplicate built by Polish intelligence and those mechanical devices were first built by the Poles who called them bombs after the French dessert "bombe surprise."
