Sophia Frederika Mathilde was no ravishing beauty - Princess Maxima she ain't. She was the daughter of Queen Pauline of Württemberg and married Willem III of the Netherlands, a Clintonesque kind of guy. Adding to the fireworks, Sophie felt intellectually superior to Willem - and openly said so. They had three children who survived childhood, but none lived to succeed Willem. He re-married another German Princess, Emma of Waldeck-Pyrmont who was also rather plain and 41 years younger. They had a daughter, Wilhelmina. The rest, as they say, is history. But Queens Emma and Wilhelmina belong in other albums. Her Wikipedia article is here.
