Born in 1843, she was forced into a bad dynastic marriage with her wayward husband Napoléon Joseph Bonaparte, nicknamed Plon-Plon. According to her Wikipedia article, "Their marriage was often compared to that of an elephant and a gazelle; the bridegroom had strong Napoleonic features (broad, bulky, and ponderous) while the bride appeared frail, short, fair-haired, and with the characteristic nose of the House of Savoy." Italians felt she was sacrificed for political reasons to an unhappy marriage. She was much more popular in France, regarded as "retiring, charitable, pious, and trapped in an unhappy marriage”, than he was. Her mother was Maria Adelaide of Austraia.
