Princess Helene Caroline Therese, Néné, was the oldest Wittelsbach daughter, born in 1834. She was to marry Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, but he fell for Helene's younger sister, Elisabeth "Sisi." This created some serious difficulties finding a husband for Helene, but she married Maximilian of Thurn und Taxis, from a wealthy German noble family, in 1858 during the early crinoline era.
