Maria Anna van Berchem, Countess of Crykenborch by ? (Bowes Museum - Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham, UK)

The Italian Tassis family had settled in what is now Flemmish Belgium, then part of the Spanish Empire where Marie de Tassis had married Hendrik, heer van Berchem. The Tassis postal service linked the Spanish Netherlands to Spain. The Site europeana.eu has this, "Previously identified as Maria de Tassis, she is more likely to be her daughter, Maria Anna van Berchem."

Maria Anna is dressed in somber black with splashes of white lace, red ribbons, and jewelry. The bodice ornament is something from a Velazquez (or a Martinez del Mazo) portrait. The cuffs of her over-sleeves are sheer black revealing the lace below, a preview of engageantes to come. The lace modesty piece-bertha is the strongest visual element of her dress. Her dress has a dark gray stomacher section.
